My Husband Will Not Book
a Necessary Appointment

By Dr. Shimi

“My husband is 52 years old and has not seen the dentist for about 16 years. The main reason is that he thinks his teeth are hopeless. He’s barely taking care of his teeth and thinks that he will lose them all and has to wear dentures soon. He is planning to only come in when he thinks it’s time to pull all the teeth and make dentures. I’m trying to convince him to go and see a dentist. I take pretty good care of my teeth but he and I just don’t see eye to eye. What can I do?” -S.T.

Thanks for taking the time to write in. Your husband is not alone. There are countless amounts of people similar to him who have an archaic mentality about the inevitability of tooth loss, likely because of what they remember of their parents’ eventual fate with dentures. This thought process may be difficult to alter at first but I often find that when such patients make their way to the dental office and see what some options that modern dentistry can offer are, that they see the benefit, value and the heightened quality of life they can achieve as a result.

I obviously don’t know what shape your husband’s mouth is in. A thorough dental exam will be necessary. Often long term dental office avoiders with the thought that their destiny lies with dentures, have a few broken down teeth causing pain, collecting food and plaque, while cutting the tongue or the cheek. There may be a few teeth that are loose due to degenerating bone due to the long-term neglect. These individuals often do not smile, because of the appearance of their front teeth and the horrible taste in their mouth. They also often do not see their medical doctors because of similar beliefs.

What I want your husband to realize is that the poor state of his mouth has been linked to a variety of health issues elsewhere in the body. Often by having a cleaning, removing the loose and broken teeth (in one visit under sedation if he so chooses), the mouth becomes much healthier in a matter of weeks. The painful teeth can be addressed with the advancements in modern dentistry that make treating such teeth very routine. Afterwards a few options regarding replacement of the missing teeth or achieving a more confident smile can be discussed and implemented.

He will be a transformed man, and don’t be surprised if his outlook on life and overall mood also improve. It all starts with that initial visit.
